Who is Hanuman Jayanti?

According to a legend, Hanuman Jayanti was born in the forest in the monkeys’ community, and his parents were Kesari and Anjana. It is believed Anjana, her mother, had insulted a sage. A curse followed her, and she was transformed into a monkey. Apparently, the curse could only be removed once she got a son. Anjana prayed for 12 years, and Lord Shiva finally granted her wish of becoming pregnant with Hanuman, who became an incarnation of Lord Shiva and a follower of Lord Vishnu.

Hanuman Jayanti is marked in the month of Chaitra on the day 15th day of Shukla Paksha. However, different regions in India celebrate the holiday on two separate days. To some, the holiday is marked on the day Hanuman Jayanti found Seetha in Lanka and burnt it. To others, the festival is on his actual birth date. Hanuman Jayanti 2021 to mark his birth date will be observed on Tuesday, April 27.

Is Hanuman Jayanti a public holiday?

Hanuman Jayanti is not a public holiday in India, but a restricted holiday. However, most people regard it with honour and, therefore, one of the holidays that most employees take as a day off per the Indian Labour Laws.

What is open or closed on Hanuman Jayanti?

As a restricted holiday, government offices, banks, post offices, and most organisations remain open. Some businesses may, however, close or operate on reduced hours. The public transport is not affected unless in some northern state areas that are very popular with this holiday.

Hanuman Jayanti is often celebrated with immense devotion as devotees of Hanuman remember and worship him on the day he was born.

The day is a time for you to visit the temple, pray, and submit your requests to Lord Hanuman. As a tradition, you will need to offer rice flour balls, red vermilion, red clothes, and red hibiscus flowers to him at the temple.

While at the temple, spend the day chanting and reciting names of Lord Ram as those who do this are considered lucky. Finally, end the day in the evening with a special feast or visit family and friends and spend some good time with them.

You can also attend processions often happening in towns in Northern India. It is very common for men, such as bodybuilders and wrestlers, to showcase their strength. They believe they will be granted power and strength just like that of Lord Hanuman Jayanti.
