Ramadhan is the most crucial time for all Muslims. Ramadan is supported by the five pillars of Islam, which include fasting, Salat (prayers), Zakat (charity), Shahadah (declaration of faith), and the Hajj pilgrimage. During Ramadan, Muslims are required to spend 30 days fasting during the daylight hours as they reflect on their faith.

Is Ramadhan a public holiday?
After the month-long observance of Ramadhan, Muslims end the period with the festival of Eid Al Fitr. The day is a gazetted public holiday in India and observed in all the states and union territories of India.
What is closed or open on Ramadan?
As a public holiday, government offices, schools, banks, post offices, and most businesses remain closed on Eid-IL-Fitr. Businesses owned Muslim faithful may reduce their opening hours during the entire month of Ramadhan. Public transport is not majorly affected, but areas with large Islam communities may experience some congestion around the places that have mosques.
Things to do on Ramadan
Ramadan is associated with prayers and fasting. Many Muslims start the day before sunrise, bathe, eat sehri, and then attend communal prayers and listen to a sermon at the mosque. Sehri mostly consists of a glass of milk and dates, as it is believed that it was a habit of prophet Muhammad to take that for breakfast. The sugar content in dates gives energy while its fiber and protein in milk makes Muslims full and prevents nausea.
As a Muslim, you are required to fast the rest of the day, and only end the fast after sunset with a meal called iftar.
You can attend an iftar party in your local area and meet family and friends and have a feast together. Traditional foods such as biryani, Haleem, kebabs, and shorbas are served. It is also a great time to rekindle old friendships and reflect on past memories.
During Ramadan's entire month, you should abstain from worldly pleasures since the month is considered holy. In fact, one significance of celebrating Ramadan is self-control.
Ramadan is also the best time to recite and internalize the Quran to understand it better. Use this opportunity to inculcate the Quran's teachings and meanings.
As a Muslim, if you have not given zakat-al-Fitr (charity donations) during Ramadan, then you need to provide it before the month ends. Zakat al-Fitr mostly consists of barley, raisins, wheat flour, and dates or its money equivalents. Apart from Zakat, you are also encouraged to volunteer and give extra charity during Ramadan. From donating clothes, providing sahur meals to the less fortunate, or even smiling at a stranger.
Considering that Ramadan is a fasting period, the end of it is marked with plenty of feasts and sharing festive meals.
