When is Good Friday 2022?

Good Friday Ceremonies

Traditionally, Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the day Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross under the orders of Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Some Christians call it God’s Friday or Holy Friday. To others, the day is a reminder of the suffering Jesus Christ faced and therefore termed as Black Friday or Sorrowful Friday.

When is Good Friday?

Good Friday is part of a three-day observance that remembers the arrest, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is marked on the Friday before Easter. The date of Good Friday changes every year on both the Gregorian calendar and Julian calendars. The very first Good Friday was marked on April 3rd, 33AD.

Is Good Friday a public holiday?

Good Friday is a public holiday in India. Although it is mostly observed by the Christians, the day is a day off to the general population across India.

What is open and closed on Good Friday?

As a public holiday, most government offices, schools, banks, post offices, and most businesses remain closed on Good Friday. Some stores may, however, open but reduce the operating hours. For public transport, you will need to check on the transit timetable with your local transport authority. However, there might be heavy traffic due to large prayer meetings in regions with large Christian populations.

Things to do on Good Friday

Good Friday is usually marked with fasting and praying, and there are many activities you can take part in as a Christian. Most church services are held in the afternoon between noon and 3 O’clock as it is believed to be the time Jesus hung on the cross. Many churches also hold the procession of the cross to depict the final hours of Jesus’ life.

As a dark and sorrowful day, consider dressing in black clothes, remove all flowers in the house, and also unlit the candles. After that, attend the church for prayers, sing hymns, and participate in the Holy Communion.

As a Christian, you will need to abstain from meat on this day. Meat is believed to be a luxury meal and not to eat it on Good Friday is a worthy sacrifice.

You could also invite friends over to your house and have some time together. It is an excellent opportunity to share memories of how you celebrated Good Friday in the early years as kids.

Why is it called Good Friday?

It may sound very odd for such a sad day to be referred to as Good Friday. However, the term good is used as this day is regarded as holy. Christians believe that Jesus Christ saved and forgave their sins through the dark events that happened to him on this day in history. Therefore, Christians prefer to consider Good Friday as a blessing and not a means of suffering.
