Diwali, also called Deepavali or Dīvali, is a popular Hindu holiday celebrated across the Republic of India. The holiday is part of the five-day Festival of Lights observed by all Hindus to symbolize the victory of good over evil. Diwali, just like Christmas for Christians, is the most important holiday celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains around the World.

When is Diwali?

The Diwali festival is usually observed between October and November. The dates change every year since they are determined by the cycle of the moon. Typically, the holiday is celebrated on the 15th day of the Kartika month of the Hindu calendar.

Is Diwali a public holiday?

Diwali is a gazetted holiday in India and, therefore, a day off for the general public. If the Diwali occurs on Sunday, the observance is not moved to Monday.

What is open or closed on Diwali?

Diwali being a gazetted holiday in India, government offices, schools, and most organizations remain closed on this day. Some businesses may close operations for a whole week to observe Diwali with their families. The transport system is not affected as the majority of people are travelling for religious celebrations. However, the local transport authorities may slightly change the public transit schedules.

Take Diwali as a perfect chance to indulge in charity work. The many underprivileged people in our society would love to celebrate Diwali but have no resources. It will give you great satisfaction to brighten somebody else's day and share Diwali's spirit with them. Distribute clothes, food, or even candy to needy kids.

As you go about the Diwali festivities, go slow on firecrackers as they have adverse effects on our environment. As much as the firecrackers may brighten our festivity mood, they cause pollution, global warming and may be traumatizing to our pets.

What are the Diwali traditions?

Households are prepared well ahead of Diwali. Many people decorate their houses with Diwali decorations such as tiny electric lights and small clay lamps. Other popular decorations include bowls of water with candles and floating flowers. It's a very common trend for people to wash their bodies with fragrant oils, wear new clothes, and share sweets with loved ones.

Most local centers organize fairs during the five-day observance and set fireworks in the evening of the Diwali Holiday. People who live near rivers usually float lit lamps on tiny rafts.

In most cases, Diwali takes place when the Indian weather is mild and pleasant. This calls for a great time for festive meals and family get-togethers. People try to pay off their debts, house exteriors are whitewashed and decorated with Diwali images and designs as the holiday serves as the beginning of a new dawn.

On the first day of the Diwali festival, it's common to eat a special breakfast on a variety of foods, and the Hindu goddess, Lakshmi's statue, carried in a procession throughout the streets.

In most towns, there are local booths set up, and children get candy and toys to celebrate Diwali. Children in Southern India wear flower wreaths on their heads and bell anklets while some boys have fun building mud castles and forts.
